Module 8 – T2 Training



The IFISH Module 8 – T2 training was held from the 13 - 17 July 2020 in Ankara. IFISH project Module 8 - T2 training was organized within the hygiene and social distance rules by taking health precautions due to the Corona Virus (COVID 19) pandemic.

The content of Module 8 was T2. Stock assessment using R. Module 8 – T2 training was given by Prof. Dr. Ali Cemal Gücü, Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Gizem Akkuş, PhD student at Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences.

The first day of training started with the opening speech of Dr.Ali Ayar, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM), Head of Livestock and Aquaculture Research department.Later, the trainers Prof. Dr. Ali Cemal Gücü and Gizem Akkuş started stock assessment using R training by giving speeches about explaining the content of Module 8 – T2.

In Module 8 - T2 training, firstly, principles of stock assessment basic concepts of VPA and VPA derivated fish stock assessment models were introduced.In this regard, data requirements of the FLR stock assessment models and introduction of the fundamental functions (vpa, readFLStock, readFLIndices, FLIndices) were covered.

In the following days of the training, visualization of input data in R, data quality control in R and Modeling with VPA – functions were explained. Subsequently, modeling parameterization with XSA, a sample code and model diagnostics for XSA and model diagnostics and selection of the best model were covered. On the fourth and last day of the training, the participants were divided into groups to evaluate the status of some Turkish fish stocks and made their presentations according to the fish species.

At the end of Module 8 – T2 training, which took place in an interactive environment, the participants were presented with certificates of participation and the training was successfully completed with the participation and closing speech of Dr. Ali Ayar, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM), Head of Livestock and Aquaculture Research department.
