Ecosystem Working Group Meeting

“Ecosystem Working Group Meeting” was held at the project office in Ankara on 5-6 September, 2019. The meeting that took two days was attended by the Italian ecosystem experts Chiara Pirotti and Francesco Colloca, as well as staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and universities’ academics.

The meeting started with the opening speech of Muharrem Aksungur and the presentation of the terms of references by project leader Ian R. Scott and continued under the moderation of Francesco Colloca.

The first presentation, "Ecosystem Approach to the Current and Future Concepts in Turkey,” was made by Binhan Ganioğlu, Fisheries Governance Expert. In this presentation, the ecosystemic approach to fisheries management was discussed to evaluate the situation in Turkey. F.Colloca shared the current situation in Italy with the participants about the Ecosystem Research in Italy. METU Institute of Marine Sciences Asst. Prof. Ekin Akoglu gave information about Marmara and Black Sea Integrated Modeling System modelings in Ecosystem Research. Dokuz Eylül University, Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology Member Aydın Ünlüoğlu, PhD made a presentation about IFISH Prototype and Project which was held in Beymelek Lagoon before the IFISH project and shared his experiences in the project. Lastly, Assoc.Prof. Ahsen Yüksek from Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences and Management made a presentation titled Biodiversity Status and Threats of Marmara Sea and gave information about water quality, current status of Marmara Sea and demersal fish distribution.

Ecosystem Working Group meeting on the second day, participants discussed about ecosystem-based fisheries management and modeling in Turkey and made suggestions about problems and solutions.
